Important paediatric rules — please read
- NEVER give aspirin to children under 16 — risk of Reye's syndrome.
- Codeine is not recommended for children under 12, and not for under-18s after tonsil/adenoid surgery for sleep apnoea.
- Don't double-dose — many cold-and-flu remedies contain paracetamol. Read the label, ask us if unsure.
- Children under 3 months with a fever (38°C+) — see GP or call NHS 111 the same day. Do not delay.
- Calpol vs Nurofen — both work, often interchangeable. Don't give both simultaneously unless advised. Alternating every 4 hours is sometimes recommended for persistent fever.
- Dehydration in children — Dioralyte from age 2+. For infants, breastmilk or formula plus paediatric oral rehydration solution; see us if signs of dehydration (sunken eyes, dry mouth, fewer wet nappies).
