What is Calpol Infant Suspension 100 ml?

A liquid paracetamol medicine for babies and young children, used to bring down a temperature and ease mild pain such as teething, sore throats and the aches that come with colds. Suitable from 2 months (and over 4 kg) in a sugar-free strawberry flavour.

How does it help?

Paracetamol is a well-established painkiller and fever reducer. It works centrally to lower the body's temperature set-point and to dampen the signals that the brain interprets as pain.

Who should take care?

Always read the patient information leaflet before use and give only the dose for your child's age and weight. Don't give with any other paracetamol-containing medicine. Don't use if your child is allergic to any of the ingredients. Speak to our pharmacist if your child is taking other medicines or has any ongoing health conditions.

Common questions

What’s the difference between Calpol Original and Calpol Sugar Free?
The medicine is identical — paracetamol 120 mg/5 ml in a strawberry-flavoured suspension. The difference is the base: the original is sweetened with sucrose, the sugar-free version isn’t. We list both, in two bottle sizes, so pick whichever suits your child. Our pharmacist can go through the full ingredient lists if your little one reacts to particular colours or sweeteners.
Can I give it to a baby under 3 months old?
Not without advice first. The product information says it must not be given to a baby under 2 months at all. Between 2 and 3 months it’s for fever after immunisation, and only if your baby weighs over 4 kg and was born after 37 weeks — and the leaflet limits how many doses are allowed at that age, so a serious infection isn’t missed. Please speak to our pharmacist or your GP first.
How do I work out the right amount for my child?
It goes by age and weight, and the pack leaflet sets it out alongside the measuring device supplied. Never give it with another paracetamol-containing medicine, and don’t carry on for more than 3 days without speaking to a pharmacist or doctor.
When should I stop treating a temperature at home and get help?
Call NHS 111 if your baby is under 3 months with a temperature of 38°C or higher, or 3–6 months with 39°C or higher, if the fever lasts 5 days or more, or if your child seems dehydrated or simply not themselves. Go to A&E or call 999 for a stiff neck, a rash that doesn’t fade under a glass, breathing difficulty, or if they’re very drowsy or hard to rouse.
