What is Benylin Infant's Cough Syrup 125ml?

Benylin Infant's Cough Syrup is a mild, apple-flavoured syrup made for little ones with a dry, tickly cough. Its active ingredient is glycerol, a simple soothing ingredient used in children's cough remedies for many years. It can be given from 3 months of age, measured with the spoon or syringe supplied.

How does it help?

Glycerol works as a demulcent: it coats the lining of the throat with a soothing film, which calms the tickle and irritation that keeps triggering a dry cough. It does not contain a cough suppressant or decongestant, which is why it can be used in babies and young children.

Who should take care?

Always read the patient information leaflet before use. Do not give to babies under 3 months, or to a child with a known intolerance to fructose or any of the ingredients. If your child has diabetes, be aware that glycerol can affect blood sugar levels. Dose by age: 3 months to 1 year, one 5ml spoonful three to four times a day; 1 to 5 years, two 5ml spoonfuls three to four times a day. If the cough lasts more than 3 days, gets worse, or your child has a high temperature, breathing difficulty or is unusually drowsy, see a doctor. A cough in a baby under 1 that is not settling should always be checked. Our pharmacist checks it is right for your child before it is dispensed.
