What is Tiger Balm White Ointment 30g?

Tiger Balm White is the cooling version of the balm, with more cajuput oil and less clove oil than the red. It has two licensed uses: symptomatic relief of minor muscular aches and pains in adults and children aged 2 and over, and treatment of tension headache in adults only. For a headache it is massaged in a pea-sized amount onto the forehead or temples, and nowhere else.

How does it help?

Camphor and menthol are counter-irritants. Rubbed into the skin they set off a strong cooling sensation in the nerve endings just under the surface, which distracts from the discomfort underneath, and both have a mild pain-relieving effect of their own. Cajuput oil is a mild counter-irritant too. Everything happens locally, in the area you rub, rather than in the body as a whole.

Who should take care?

Always read the patient information leaflet before use. For external use only. Do not use it on wounds, damaged, inflamed or irritated skin, or if you have a skin disease, and stop if irritation develops. Keep it away from your eyes and mouth, do not apply it to the nostrils or inhale it, and do not bandage the area. Wash your hands straight after use. It must not be used on children under 2 years because of the risk of breathing problems, and it must not be used for asthma or other conditions where the airways are over-sensitive. It is not for headaches other than tension headache - do not use it for a headache that is one-sided, or comes with nausea, vomiting, dizziness or changes in your vision, or that starts on waking or after hard exercise. Do not smoke or go near a naked flame while wearing it: the ointment, and fabric that has touched it, burns easily and is a serious fire risk. See a doctor if muscular symptoms last more than two weeks, or if a headache lasts 24 hours without a break or keeps coming back over the following week. Avoid excessive use in pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Our pharmacist checks it is right for you before it is dispensed.
