What is Tiger Balm Red Ointment 19g?

Tiger Balm Red is a firm, warming ointment that you rub into the skin over a sore muscle. It is licensed for the temporary relief of muscular aches and pains in adults and children aged 2 years and older. The 19g jar is the size most people keep in a kit bag or a bedside drawer.

How does it help?

Camphor and levomenthol are what pharmacists call counter-irritants. Rubbed into the skin they create a warming, then cooling, sensation in the nerve endings near the surface, which takes the edge off the ache underneath, and both also have a mild pain-relieving action of their own. Cajuput oil adds to the warming feeling and clove oil is warming and slightly pain-relieving too. The effect is local, at the spot you rub it in.

Who should take care?

Always read the patient information leaflet before use. For external use only, on unbroken skin - do not put it on wounds, damaged or irritated skin, and keep it away from your eyes, nose, mouth and other tender areas. Wash your hands straight after use, and do not bandage the area tightly. Do not smoke or go near a naked flame while you are wearing it: the ointment, and any clothing, bedding or dressings that have been in contact with it, burns very easily and is a serious fire risk - washing reduces but does not fully remove the build-up. Not to be used on children under 2 years. Stop using it if irritation develops, and see your doctor if your symptoms last longer than two weeks.
