What is Tiger Balm Red Ointment 30g?

Tiger Balm Red is a licensed medicine (PL 02855/0234) in the form of a strong-smelling red ointment. It is massaged into the skin over an aching muscle for the symptomatic relief of muscular aches, pains and stiffness. This is the 30 g jar.

How does it help?

Camphor and levomenthol are what pharmacists call counter-irritants. Massaged into the skin they produce a warm sensation that turns cool and tingling, and they bring blood flow to the surface — that competing sensation is what takes the edge off the ache underneath, rather than the ointment acting on the muscle itself. The cajuput and clove oils add to the warming effect and give the balm its distinctive smell.

Who should take care?

Always read the patient information leaflet before use. For external use on unbroken skin only — do not apply it to broken, damaged, irritated, inflamed or sunburnt skin, and keep it well away from the eyes, mouth, nose and other sensitive areas. Wash your hands after use. Do not cover the area with a tight bandage and do not use a hot water bottle or heat pad over it. Do not use it if you have ever reacted to camphor, menthol, clove oil or a similar rub. It is not for children under 2 years. Speak to our pharmacist if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if the pain is severe, followed an injury, or has not settled after a few days — our pharmacist checks that what you have chosen is right for you before it is dispensed.
