What is Orajel Extra Strength Toothache Gel 5.3g?
Orajel Extra Strength is an oral gel containing benzocaine, a local anaesthetic. It is used on the gum around a painful tooth for short-term relief of toothache and mouth pain. It is a pharmacy medicine, so it is supplied after a short conversation with our pharmacist.
How does it help?
Benzocaine is a local anaesthetic. Applied to the gum or the sore area, it temporarily blocks the nerve signals in the surface tissue, so the area feels numb and the pain eases for a while. It treats the pain, not the cause, so the underlying problem still needs a dentist.

Who should take care?
Always read the patient information leaflet before use. Do not use if you are allergic to benzocaine or to other local anaesthetics of the ester type. Benzocaine has rarely been linked with methaemoglobinaemia, a serious condition affecting how blood carries oxygen: seek urgent medical help if the lips, fingertips or skin look pale, grey or blue, or if you become breathless, light-headed or confused after use. Do not use more often or for longer than the leaflet says, do not use it to relieve teething, and see a dentist about the cause of the pain. Tell us if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if the person it is for has a heart or breathing condition. Our pharmacist checks it is right for you before it is dispensed.
