What is Nicotinell Medicated Chewing Gum 2mg & 4mg?
Nicotinell Medicated Chewing Gum is a sugar-free nicotine replacement gum in mint or fruit flavour. It is licensed to relieve and prevent the cravings and withdrawal symptoms of tobacco dependence, to help smokers quit or cut down before quitting, and for smokers who are unable to smoke. The 2 mg strength is for smokers with a low to moderate nicotine dependency; the 4 mg strength is for a strong dependency.
How does it help?
Chew a piece slowly when you feel the urge to smoke, and the nicotine is absorbed through the lining of the mouth to ease the craving. Use no more than one piece an hour - most people need 8 to 12 pieces a day; the maximum is 24 a day with the 2 mg gum and 15 a day with the 4 mg gum. After about 3 months, cut down the number of pieces each day and stop when you are down to 1 or 2 a day.
Key benefits
- Use it when a craving hits, so you control when you take nicotine
- Sugar free, in mint or fruit flavour
- Licensed from age 12, in two strengths to match how much you smoke
- Can be used to cut down before a quit date, not only to stop outright
Who should take care?
Always read the patient information leaflet before use. Not for non-smokers or occasional smokers. The 2 mg gum may not suit smokers with a strong dependency - the 4 mg gum is for them. If you have recently been in hospital with a heart attack, stroke, unstable angina or a serious heart rhythm problem, or have uncontrolled high blood pressure, speak to your doctor first. Swallowed nicotine can make stomach ulcers, gastritis and inflammation of the mouth or throat worse. Tell our pharmacist if you have epilepsy, diabetes, or liver or kidney problems, or are pregnant or breastfeeding. Keep out of the reach of children: doses adults tolerate can be dangerous to a small child.
