What is Lemsip Max Day and Night Cold and Flu Capsules 24?

A cold and flu pack with two kinds of capsule. The red and yellow daytime capsules contain paracetamol, a decongestant (phenylephrine) and a little caffeine. The red and blue night-time capsules contain paracetamol and the decongestant without the caffeine. The night-time capsule does not contain a sedative - it eases a blocked nose so you can settle to sleep.

How does it help?

Paracetamol reduces the pain signals you feel and acts on the part of the brain that controls body temperature, easing aches, headache and sore throat and bringing a fever down. Phenylephrine narrows the swollen blood vessels lining the nose, which helps clear congestion. The caffeine in the daytime capsule helps with the tiredness and drowsiness that often come with a cold or flu.

Who should take care?

Always read the patient information leaflet before use. For adults and young people aged 16 and over, for up to 5 days - see a doctor or pharmacist if symptoms last longer or get worse. Take two daytime capsules every 4 to 6 hours, up to three times a day, and two night-time capsules at night if needed - never more than 8 capsules in 24 hours. Do not take it with any other medicine containing paracetamol, or with another decongestant or cold and flu remedy - a paracetamol overdose can cause serious liver damage even if you feel well at the time. Do not take it if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, an overactive thyroid, diabetes, an enlarged prostate, closed-angle glaucoma or a phaeochromocytoma, or if you have taken an MAOI antidepressant in the last two weeks. Speak to us first if you have liver or kidney problems, drink alcohol regularly, have Raynaud's phenomenon or have had a stomach ulcer, or if you are pregnant, have had pre-eclampsia, or are breastfeeding. Cut down on coffee, tea and energy drinks while taking it, as too much caffeine can cause palpitations. Our pharmacist checks it is right for you before it is supplied.
