What is Ibuleve Ibuprofen Gel 50g (5% and 10%)?

Ibuleve is a clear gel containing ibuprofen, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory painkiller, that you apply directly to the painful area rather than swallowing. It comes in two strengths: Ibuleve Pain Relief Gel (5%) and Ibuleve Maximum Strength Gel (10%). Both are licensed for backache, rheumatic pain, and muscular aches, pains and swellings such as strains, sprains and sports injuries.

How does it help?

Ibuprofen blocks the enzymes that make prostaglandins, the chemicals that cause pain and inflammation at the site of an injury. Applied as a gel it is absorbed through the skin to act locally in the muscles and joints beneath, with much less of the medicine reaching the rest of the body than a tablet would. Massage a thin layer into the affected area up to three times a day (about 1 to 2.5 g of the 5% gel, or 2 to 5 cm of the 10% gel per application), leaving at least four hours between applications, and wash your hands afterwards unless you are treating them.

Who should take care?

Always read the patient information leaflet before use. Do not use if you are allergic to ibuprofen, aspirin or other anti-inflammatory painkillers, especially if that allergy caused asthma, a runny nose or hives, and do not use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Do not apply to broken or damaged skin, or near the eyes, mouth or other mucous membranes. Ask our pharmacist before use if you have asthma. Not for children under 12 unless a doctor advises it. The gel is flammable: do not smoke or go near naked flames while using it, and be aware that clothing or bedding that has been in contact with it burns more easily. Do not use for more than two weeks without advice from our pharmacist or your doctor.
