What is Cyclizine 50 mg Tablets (travel sickness)?

A pharmacy tablet for preventing and relieving travel (motion) sickness, and the nausea that can come with it.

How does it help?

It contains cyclizine, an antihistamine that acts on the part of the brain and inner-ear balance system involved in triggering travel sickness.

Key benefits

  • Helps prevent and relieve travel sickness
  • Eases nausea from motion
  • Convenient tablet to take before travelling
  • Useful for cars, coaches, boats and planes
  • Pharmacist-checked before supply

Who should take care?

Always read the patient information leaflet before use. Don't use if you're allergic to any of the ingredients. This medicine can cause drowsiness, so don't drive or operate machinery if affected, and avoid alcohol. Speak to our pharmacist if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, taking other medicines, or have any ongoing health conditions such as glaucoma, prostate problems or epilepsy. Our pharmacist checks every order before it's supplied.

Common questions

What is cyclizine 50 mg used for, and who can take it?
It’s an antihistamine licensed to prevent and treat nausea and vomiting, including travel sickness, and it can help with the vertigo that comes with Ménière’s disease and other inner-ear upsets. The tablets are for adults and children aged 6 and over — below 6 they aren’t recommended, so ask about other travel sickness options.
When should I take it before a journey?
For preventing travel sickness the licence says to take it about one to two hours before you set off, so it has time to work. It can also be taken once the nausea has already started. The pack leaflet gives the dose, and our pharmacist will check it suits you and your trip.
Will cyclizine make me drowsy?
It can, so find out how it affects you before driving or using machinery. Don’t drink alcohol with it — cyclizine adds to alcohol’s effects, and the licence rules it out completely if you’ve been drinking heavily. Tell our pharmacist if you have glaucoma, prostate trouble or epilepsy, which all need extra care.
Why is there a limit on how much I can order?
Cyclizine is a Pharmacy (P) medicine that can be misused, and the GPhC asks pharmacies to make sure every supply is safe and in the person’s best interest. So we keep quantities sensible, ask a few short questions, and our pharmacist reviews every order before it’s sent. It’s nothing personal — it’s how P medicines should be sold.
