What is Phenergan Elixir 5 mg/5 ml Oral Solution?

Phenergan Elixir is liquid promethazine. It treats the same conditions as the tablets — allergic conditions, travel sickness and short-term sleep problems — as a sugar-free orange solution, which makes smaller and more adjustable doses easier to measure.

How does it help?

Promethazine blocks histamine and also acts on the brain, which is why it causes drowsiness. The liquid form is often chosen where tablets are difficult to swallow or a smaller dose is needed.

Who should take care?

Not for children under 6 years — under current licensing this product can only be supplied for use in those aged 6 or over. Drowsiness can last up to 12 hours; do not drive if affected. Avoid alcohol. Always read the leaflet.

Can I give Phenergan Elixir to my child?
Never under 6 years of age — the licence rules this out because of the risk of serious breathing problems. For children over 6 the Elixir allows accurate lower dosing; the pharmacist will confirm the right dose for age before any supply.
How long does the drowsiness last?
Up to 12 hours per the licence — so a night-time dose can still affect the following morning. Avoid alcohol, and don’t drive if you feel drowsy, dizzy or your vision is blurred.
