What is Avomine 25 mg Tablets (Promethazine Teoclate)?

Avomine is a travel sickness tablet containing promethazine teoclate. It prevents and relieves motion sickness, general nausea and vertigo.

How does it help?

Promethazine teoclate is a long-acting sedating antihistamine that settles the balance signals from the inner ear which cause motion sickness. Because it is long-acting, a single dose the night before a journey usually covers the whole of the next day.

Who should take care?

Causes drowsiness — do not drive if affected, and avoid alcohol. Not suitable for children under 5 years. Always read the leaflet in your pack.

Common questions

Is Avomine the same as Phenergan?
Both contain promethazine, but not the same salt — Avomine is promethazine teoclate, while Phenergan is promethazine hydrochloride. Avomine’s licence is the anti-sickness one: preventing and treating nausea and vomiting, including travel sickness, and vertigo. Phenergan also covers allergy and short-term sleep problems. How far ahead of a journey should I take it?
It depends on the journey. The leaflet starts the routine the night before you travel for a long trip, and one to two hours beforehand for a short one — and it can still be taken once you already feel sick. The pack leaflet gives the dose, and our pharmacist can check it’s right for you.
Can I give Avomine to my child?
Not under 5 — the tablets aren’t suitable for that age group, and for children aged 2 to 5 the leaflet recommends an oral liquid instead. It must never be given to a child under 2. Tell us your child’s age before you travel and our pharmacist will confirm what’s suitable.
Can I use it for dizziness or vertigo?
Not on your own. The leaflet says a doctor may recommend promethazine teoclate for vertigo or sickness after an operation, and that you should then take it as your doctor tells you. Don’t take it for more than seven days without medical advice, and see your GP if dizziness keeps coming back.
