What is Covonia Original Bronchial Balsam Syrup 150ml?

Covonia Original Bronchial Balsam Syrup is a pharmacy medicine for the relief of non-productive (dry, tickly) coughs, such as those that come with the common cold and bronchitis. It combines dextromethorphan, a cough suppressant, with menthol.

How does it help?

Dextromethorphan acts on the cough reflex to quieten a dry cough that is not bringing anything up, and menthol gives a cooling feel to the throat. Adults and children over 12 take 10ml, which can be repeated after 4 hours if needed. Older people take the adult dose with caution.

Who should take care?

Always read the patient information leaflet before use. Not for children under 12, or for a chesty cough that brings up phlegm or a cough that has lasted a long time. Do not take it if you have liver disease, are having or are at risk of breathing failure or an asthma attack, or have taken an MAOI antidepressant in the last 2 weeks. Speak to our pharmacist first if you have asthma, or take other medicines - especially antidepressants such as fluoxetine or paroxetine. It contains dextromethorphan, which can cause addiction and opioid-like effects at high doses, so never take more than the label says. Best avoided while breastfeeding. It contains 8.8g of sugar per dose. Normally it does not cause drowsiness, but take care at first. If symptoms persist, see your doctor.
