What is XLS-Medical Max Strength Tablets?

A Class IIb medical device tablet taken with meals to help with weight management and to support weight loss as part of a reduced-calorie diet. It's designed for adults who want to lose or manage their weight.

How does it help?

The tablets contain Clavitanol, a fibre complex derived from plant sources. It binds to a portion of the fat and carbohydrate in your food in the gut so that less is absorbed and passes naturally out of the body.

Key benefits

  • Supports weight loss and weight management
  • Reduces absorption of dietary fat
  • CE/UKCA-certified medical device
  • Taken with your main meals
  • Works alongside a reduced-calorie diet

Who should take care?

Always read the instructions for use before starting. Not intended for children, or for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Drink plenty of water and take other medicines separately from these tablets. Speak to our pharmacist if you're taking other medicines or have any ongoing health conditions.

Common questions

Is XLS-Medical Max Strength still available?
No — it’s been discontinued and won’t be coming back into stock, which is why there’s no add-to-basket option on this page. We’ve kept the page up because people still search for what it was and how it worked. If you were using it, our pharmacist can talk through what else might suit you — call 0113 244 1551.
Was XLS-Medical Max Strength a medicine?
No. It was a CE/UKCA-certified Class IIb medical device, not an MHRA-licensed medicine, so it acted physically in the gut rather than being absorbed like a drug. That’s also why it was general sale and needed no prescription or pharmacist supervision. Devices are assessed for safety and performance, which isn’t the same route a medicine goes through.
Who was it not suitable for?
It was intended for adults. The manufacturer’s information said not to take it during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, and it wasn’t intended for children. It also advised drinking plenty of water and taking any other medicines separately from the tablets, because a product that binds things in the gut can affect how other medicines are absorbed.
When should I see a GP about my weight?
Products like this only ever worked alongside eating fewer calories and moving more — still the NHS’s main advice, aiming for around 1–2 lb (0.5–1 kg) a week. See your GP if your BMI is in the overweight or obese range and you’d like help, if you have something like diabetes, high blood pressure or joint pain alongside it, or if you’re losing weight without trying.
