What is Ultra Chloraseptic Anaesthetic Throat Spray?

A pump spray containing benzocaine, a local anaesthetic, licensed for the symptomatic relief of sore throat pain. You hold your breath and spray it to the back of the throat. Adults and children aged 13 and over use three sprays, and children aged 6 to 12 use one spray under adult supervision, repeated every two to three hours up to eight doses a day.

How does it help?

Benzocaine is a local anaesthetic of the ester type. Sprayed onto the throat lining it temporarily blocks the movement of sodium and potassium through the membranes of the pain nerve endings at the surface, so those nerves cannot pass the pain signal on. It goes to work quickly because it is delivered straight onto the sore area, and the numbness you feel is the sign it is working. Very little of it is absorbed into the body.

Who should take care?

Always read the patient information leaflet before use. Not for children under 6, and not for a child who cannot hold their breath while it is sprayed. Do not use it for more than three days in a row, and do not spray it into your eyes. Do not use it if you have ever reacted to benzocaine or another local anaesthetic, or if you have been told you have a rare blood condition called methaemoglobinaemia. Do not use it, and get medical help, if you have any difficulty breathing, noisy breathing, or severe difficulty swallowing. See your doctor if your sore throat is severe or persistent, or comes with fever, headache or feeling sick. Your throat will go numb after using it, so avoid eating or drinking until the numbness has worn off. It contains propylene glycol, which may cause skin irritation, and it is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Our pharmacist checks it is right for you before it is dispensed.
