Syndol is a pharmacy-only painkiller tablet combining paracetamol, a low dose of codeine, doxylamine and caffeine, for short-term use in moderate pain that paracetamol or ibuprofen alone has not eased.

What is Syndol Film-coated Tablets?

Syndol is a film-coated tablet that brings four ingredients together: paracetamol, a low dose of codeine, doxylamine and caffeine. It is licensed for the short-term treatment of acute moderate pain that has not been relieved by paracetamol, ibuprofen or aspirin on their own. Because it contains codeine, it is a pharmacy medicine and is intended for no more than three days' use.

How does it help?

Paracetamol and codeine act on pain in different ways, so together they reach pain that paracetamol alone has not settled - codeine works on the opioid pathways in the brain and spinal cord that carry the pain signal. Doxylamine is a sedating antihistamine, which is why the tablets can make you feel drowsy. Caffeine is included as an adjuvant, to help the paracetamol along.

Key benefits

  • Four ingredients in one tablet, so there is nothing to combine yourself
  • Intended for the days when paracetamol, ibuprofen or aspirin alone have not been enough
  • Sold under a pharmacist's supervision, so you can ask about it face to face
  • Our pharmacist checks it is right for you, and reviews anything you tell us, before it is dispensed

Who should take care?

Always read the patient information leaflet before use. This medicine contains codeine, which can cause addiction - take it for no longer than three days, and if the pain is not controlled speak to our pharmacist or your GP. Do not take any other medicine containing paracetamol at the same time; an overdose of paracetamol is dangerous even when you feel well at first. It can make you drowsy, so do not drive or use tools or machinery until you know how it affects you, and avoid alcohol. It is not for children under 12, and not for use while breastfeeding. Tell us about any breathing problems, any other medicines you take, and about pregnancy - our pharmacist will review this with you before anything is dispensed.
