What is Sudafed Decongestant Liquid 100ml?

A liquid decongestant for a blocked nose and blocked sinuses during a cold. Every 5ml spoonful contains 30mg of pseudoephedrine hydrochloride. Because the dose is measured out as a liquid, it can be scaled for children, which is why it is licensed from 6 years.

How does it help?

A cold makes the blood vessels in the lining of the nose and sinuses swell, and that swelling is what narrows the airway and gives the blocked, stuffy feeling. Pseudoephedrine narrows those vessels so the lining settles back down and air moves freely again. It is taken by mouth, and it acts on the lining of the sinuses and the rest of the upper airway as well as the nose itself.

Who should take care?

Always read the patient information leaflet before use. It is not for children under 6, and not for anyone with heart or circulation disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, an overactive thyroid, a phaeochromocytoma, closed angle glaucoma or severe kidney disease, or for anyone taking a monoamine oxidase inhibitor antidepressant, a beta-blocker or another decongestant. Extra care is needed with an enlarged prostate, thyroid disease or severe liver problems. It can disturb sleep, so avoid a dose close to bedtime. Stop and get advice straight away if you develop hallucinations, restlessness, a severe headache, a severe skin reaction or any change in your vision.
