What is Sudafed Congestion & Headache Relief Day & Night Capsules 16?

A two-part cold and flu pack. The day capsules contain paracetamol for pain and fever and phenylephrine to clear a blocked nose, plus a small amount of caffeine. The night capsules contain the same paracetamol and phenylephrine without the caffeine, so they can be taken later in the evening.

How does it help?

Paracetamol damps down pain signals and brings a raised temperature back towards normal. Phenylephrine works on the swollen blood vessels lining the nose and sinuses; it is that swelling, rather than the mucus itself, that blocks the airway, so narrowing the vessels lets air move through again. The daytime capsule also contains a small amount of caffeine, a mild stimulant, which is left out of the night capsule, and that is what allows the pair to cover a full day.

Who should take care?

Always read the patient information leaflet before use. These capsules contain paracetamol, so do not take any other paracetamol product at the same time and never exceed the stated dose. They are not for anyone with high blood pressure, heart or circulation disease, diabetes, an overactive thyroid, closed angle glaucoma, a phaeochromocytoma, severe liver or kidney problems or an enlarged prostate, or for anyone taking a monoamine oxidase inhibitor antidepressant or who stopped one in the last two weeks. Extra care is needed if you drink alcohol regularly or have any liver disease. See your GP if symptoms last more than a few days or you get worse.
