What is Robitussin Dry Cough Medicine 250ml?

A liquid cough medicine containing dextromethorphan, a cough suppressant. It is for a dry, tickly, unproductive cough - the sort that keeps repeating without bringing up any phlegm and often disturbs sleep. It is licensed for adults and children aged 12 and over.

How does it help?

Coughing is a reflex organised by the brain. Dextromethorphan acts on the cough centre in the brainstem and raises the threshold at which that reflex fires, so an irritated, dry throat is less likely to set off another bout of coughing. It does not thin or loosen mucus, which is why it suits a dry cough and is not the right choice for a chesty one.

Who should take care?

Always read the patient information leaflet before use. This medicine is for a dry cough only - do not use it for a chesty cough that brings up phlegm, or if you have asthma, another long-term lung condition or any difficulty with your breathing. Do not take it with, or within two weeks of, a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), and tell us about any antidepressant or other medicine you take, because dextromethorphan can interact. Tell us if you have liver problems or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Do not exceed the dose on the label, and see your GP if the cough lasts more than a few days or comes with a high temperature, a rash, chest pain, breathlessness or coughing up blood.
