What is Robitussin Mucus Cough and Congestion Relief 100ml?
A liquid medicine with two active ingredients: guaifenesin, an expectorant, and pseudoephedrine, a decongestant. It is for a chesty, productive cough that comes with a blocked or stuffy nose, usually during a cold. It is licensed for adults and children aged 12 and over.
How does it help?
Guaifenesin increases the water content of the mucus in the airways so it becomes thinner and less sticky, which makes it easier for a cough to shift rather than tugging away at nothing. Pseudoephedrine narrows the swollen blood vessels lining the nose and sinuses, so the lining shrinks back and air moves through more freely. Between them they address the two things that make a cold-related cough uncomfortable: thick mucus on the chest and a blocked nose.
Key benefits
- Covers a chesty cough and a blocked nose in one measured dose.
- Guaifenesin thins mucus so a cough can clear it more easily.
- Pseudoephedrine eases the swelling in the nose and sinuses that causes congestion.
- A pharmacy medicine - our pharmacist checks it is right for you before it is supplied.
Who should take care?
Always read the patient information leaflet before use. Because it contains pseudoephedrine it is not suitable for everyone - tell us if you have high blood pressure, heart disease, a previous stroke, diabetes, an overactive thyroid, glaucoma, kidney or liver problems, or difficulty passing urine because of an enlarged prostate. Do not take it with, or within two weeks of, a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), and do not take it alongside another cold, flu or decongestant product, as you may double up on the same ingredients. Stop taking it and get medical help straight away if you develop a sudden severe headache, with or without sickness, vision changes, confusion or a seizure. Tell us if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. See your GP if the cough lasts more than a few days or comes with a high temperature, chest pain, breathlessness or coughing up blood.
