What is Robitussin Chesty Cough Medicine 250ml?

A liquid cough medicine containing guaifenesin, an expectorant. It is for a chesty cough, the kind where mucus (phlegm) sits on the chest and is hard to bring up. It is licensed for adults and children aged 12 and over.

How does it help?

Guaifenesin works by thinning and loosening the mucus in the airways, so each cough is more productive and clears the chest more easily. It does not suppress the cough reflex, which is why it suits a chesty cough rather than a dry, tickly one. The dose is one 10ml measure up to four times a day.

Who should take care?

Always read the patient information leaflet before use. Not for children under 12. Do not take it if you are allergic to any of the ingredients, and do not use it with other cough and cold medicines. Speak to a doctor first if you have a long-term cough, such as one linked to smoking, asthma, chronic bronchitis or emphysema. Stop and ask a healthcare professional if the cough lasts more than 7 days, keeps coming back, or comes with a fever, rash or persistent headache. It contains sorbitol and maltitol, so it is not suitable for people with hereditary fructose intolerance and may have a mild laxative effect, and it contains a small amount of alcohol (242mg in each 10ml dose).
