Sedating antihistamine licensed for allergy, travel sickness and short-term sleep problems.

What is Promethazine Hydrochloride 10 mg Tablets?

Promethazine hydrochloride is a sedating antihistamine. The 10 mg tablet is licensed for three different things: allergic conditions such as hay fever and hives, prevention of travel sickness, and short-term treatment of sleep problems in adults.

How does it help?

It blocks histamine, the chemical your body releases during an allergic reaction, and it also acts on the brain — which is why it causes drowsiness. That sedation is a side effect when taken for allergy, and the intended effect when taken for sleep or travel sickness.

Key benefits

  • One medicine licensed for allergy, travel sickness and short-term sleep
  • A different licensed dose for each use — our pharmacist will confirm which applies
  • Taken the night before travel for motion sickness
  • Pharmacist-checked before it is supplied

Who should take care?

Not for children under 6 years. Drowsiness, dizziness and blurred vision can last up to 12 hours — do not drive or operate machinery if affected. Avoid alcohol during treatment. Always read the leaflet in your pack.

Common questions

Is promethazine 10mg the same as Phenergan?
Yes — promethazine hydrochloride is the medicine and Phenergan is the brand it’s sold under. The 10 mg tablet is the lower strength, often used for allergy and travel sickness where the 25 mg dose isn’t needed. Our Phenergan guide walks through all the licensed uses.
What is promethazine 10mg used for?
It’s a sedating antihistamine licensed for allergic conditions such as hay fever and hives, and for travel sickness. Because it causes drowsiness, it behaves differently from non-drowsy tablets like cetirizine or loratadine — our pharmacist can help you pick the right one.
Can children take promethazine?
Never under 6 years of age — the licence rules it out because of the risk of serious breathing problems. For children over 6 there are specific lower doses; see our Phenergan guide and always speak to the pharmacist first.
Will it make me drowsy the next day?
It can. The licence warns drowsiness, dizziness and blurred vision can last up to 12 hours after a dose — don’t drive or use machinery if you feel affected, and avoid alcohol while taking it.
