Is this the same as regular Nytol?
No. This one contains valerian root extract, not diphenhydramine. It’s a registered traditional herbal medicinal product (THR 01074/0002) for the temporary relief of sleep disturbances, based on long-standing traditional use rather than clinical trial evidence. The diphenhydramine Nytol tablets are a pharmacy medicine and work differently.
How long does it take to work?
Not straight away. The manufacturer says the effect may not happen immediately and that the tablets should be taken continuously for two to four weeks. If your sleep hasn’t improved after four weeks, or it’s getting worse, stop and speak to a doctor — the leaflet says the same.
Who shouldn’t take it?
It isn’t recommended for anyone under 18, or during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Don’t take it if you’re allergic to any of the ingredients, or if you’re already taking another medicine for sleep. Alcohol can increase the sedative effect, and if it makes you sleepy, don’t drive or use tools or machinery.
When should I see a GP about my sleep?
If you’ve had trouble sleeping for months, if it’s affecting how you get through the day, or if things are getting worse rather than better.
