What is Nytol One-A-Night Sleep Aid Tablets?

A pharmacy sleep aid tablet for adults and children over 16 to help with occasional sleeplessness. It's taken as a short-term measure when you're struggling to fall or stay asleep.

How does it help?

Diphenhydramine is a sedating antihistamine. Alongside its allergy action it blocks histamine in the brain, which produces drowsiness and helps you drift off to sleep.

Who should take care?

Always read the patient information leaflet before use. Intended for short-term use only. May cause drowsiness that can last into the next day, so don't drive or operate machinery if affected, and avoid alcohol. Don't use if you're allergic to any of the ingredients. Common questions

What’s the difference between Nytol Original and Nytol One-A-Night?
Both are the same medicine — diphenhydramine hydrochloride — and both are pharmacy sleep aids for temporary sleep disturbance. The difference is the strength per tablet: Original is 25 mg and One-A-Night is 50 mg, so One-A-Night gets you there in fewer tablets. The manufacturer says the nightly amount of diphenhydramine is the same either way.
How long can I take it for?
Short term only. The licence says don’t use it continuously for more than two weeks without speaking to a doctor, and the NHS makes the same point — a pharmacy sleep aid can help for a week or two but won’t treat insomnia. Is it safe to drive after taking it?
Not while you still feel it. Diphenhydramine is a sedating antihistamine, and the licence warns it can impair concentration and coordination and cause dizziness or blurred vision — so don’t drive or use machinery if you’re affected, and avoid alcohol, which adds to the sedation. If you wake heavy-headed, wait until it wears off.
Who shouldn’t take Nytol?
It’s for adults and young people aged 16 and over, so not for younger children. It isn’t recommended in pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
