What is Nurofen Plus?

Nurofen Plus is a stronger pain-relief tablet for short-term acute pain that is not relieved by ibuprofen or paracetamol alone. Each tablet contains ibuprofen 200 mg and codeine phosphate 12.8 mg.

How does it help?

Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory that reduces pain and swelling, while codeine is an opioid pain reliever that acts on the way the body senses pain; together they provide added relief for acute pain.

Key benefits

  • Combines ibuprofen and codeine
  • For short-term acute pain
  • For pain not relieved by ibuprofen or paracetamol alone
  • Pharmacy-only medicine checked before supply

Who should take care?

Contains codeine, which can cause addiction if used continuously for more than three days, so take for no more than three days at a time. Not for children under 12. As it contains an NSAID, take care if you have asthma or a history of stomach ulcers, take with food, and don't take with other NSAIDs or paracetamol-plus-codeine products. Can cause drowsiness. Always read the patient information leaflet before use. Don't use if you're allergic to any of the ingredients. Speak to our pharmacist if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, taking other medicines, or have any ongoing health conditions. Our pharmacist checks every order before it's supplied.

Common questions

What is the difference between Nurofen and Nurofen Plus?
Nurofen is ibuprofen on its own. Nurofen Plus adds codeine phosphate 12.8 mg to the same 200 mg of ibuprofen, and its licence is narrower: short-term acute pain that paracetamol, ibuprofen or aspirin alone haven’t relieved. That extra ingredient is why it’s a pharmacy medicine, why we ask questions, and why it’s limited to three days.
Why can I only take it for three days?
Because of the codeine. The licence warns it can cause addiction if taken continuously for more than three days, so it’s meant for a short flare of pain, not ongoing use. It also warns that taking it for headaches for more than three days can make the headaches worse. If pain is still there after three days, that needs a GP, not another pack.
Who should not take Nurofen Plus?
The licence rules it out under 12 years old, and for anyone breastfeeding, because codeine passes into breast milk. It’s also ruled out in the last three months of pregnancy, in people who have had a stomach ulcer or bleeding, in asthma or allergy triggered by aspirin or anti-inflammatories, and in severe heart, liver or kidney failure. Our pharmacist checks this before supply.
Will it make me drowsy, and can I drive?
It can. Codeine commonly causes sleepiness, and constipation is common too. The NHS advice is simple: if you feel sleepy or tired after taking codeine, don’t drive, ride a bike or use machinery until it has worn off. It’s also best to avoid alcohol, which increases the risk of side effects.
