What is Codasolve Effervescent Tablets 32?

Codasolve is an effervescent tablet that you dissolve in at least half a tumbler of water before drinking. It is a pharmacy medicine for the short-term treatment of acute moderate pain, such as migraine, headache, dental pain, period pain, backache, rheumatic pain, strains, sprains and sciatica, when paracetamol, ibuprofen or aspirin alone has not worked.

How does it help?

Paracetamol reduces the pain signals registered by the brain and spinal cord. Codeine is a mild opioid painkiller: the liver converts some of it into morphine, which acts on pain receptors in the nervous system. Caffeine is included as the third ingredient of the combination. Because the tablet is dissolved first, it is already in solution when you drink it.

Who should take care?

Always read the patient information leaflet before use. Can cause addiction. For three days use only: if you need it for longer than three days, see your doctor or pharmacist, and taking painkillers for headaches for more than three days can make them worse. Do not take it with any other medicine that contains paracetamol or codeine. It is not for children under 12, for anyone under 18 with breathing problems or who has had their tonsils or adenoids removed for sleep apnoea, for people known to be ultra-rapid metabolisers of codeine, or for people with phenylketonuria, as it contains aspartame. Do not use it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Each tablet contains 403mg of sodium, which matters if you are on a low-salt diet. Take extra care if you have liver or kidney disease, drink alcohol regularly, have a bowel blockage or sudden stomach problems, or have had your gallbladder removed, and avoid too much tea, coffee or energy drinks while taking it.
