What is Ibuprofen & Codeine 200mg/12.8mg Tablets 32?
These film-coated tablets are a pharmacy medicine for the short-term treatment of acute moderate pain, such as rheumatic and muscular pain, backache, neuralgia, migraine, headache, dental pain and period pain, when paracetamol, ibuprofen or aspirin alone has not been enough.
How does it help?
Ibuprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) that reduces the prostaglandins that cause pain and inflammation. Codeine is a mild opioid painkiller that the liver partly converts into morphine, which acts on pain receptors in the nervous system. The two ingredients relieve pain in different ways.
Key benefits
- Two painkillers that work in different ways, for pain that single painkillers have not eased
- Ibuprofen also reduces inflammation, which can help with muscle, joint and dental pain
- 1 or 2 tablets every 4 to 6 hours, at least 4 hours apart, and no more than 6 tablets in 24 hours
- Supplied by a pharmacist, who can check it against your other medicines
Who should take care?
Always read the patient information leaflet before use. Can cause addiction. For short-term use only: see a doctor if you need it for more than 3 days or your pain gets worse, and taking painkillers for headaches too often can make them worse. Do not take it with any other medicine that contains codeine or with other anti-inflammatory painkillers. It is not suitable for children under 12; if you have ever had a stomach ulcer or bleeding, or asthma, swelling or hives after aspirin or another anti-inflammatory; if you have severe liver, kidney or heart failure, breathing problems, long-term constipation or raised pressure inside the head; if you take an MAOI (a medicine for depression or Parkinson's disease) or stopped one in the last 14 days; if you are known to be an ultra-rapid metaboliser of codeine; for under-18s who have had their tonsils or adenoids removed for sleep apnoea; or in the last three months of pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Speak to us first if you have asthma, high blood pressure or heart problems, a bowel condition such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, lupus, an underactive thyroid, gallbladder or pancreas problems, or a history of drug or alcohol misuse, or if you take a blood thinner, steroid tablets, an SSRI antidepressant or sedating medicines. It can make you dizzy or drowsy and may affect your ability to drive, and alcohol can increase these effects. Our pharmacist checks it is right for you before it is supplied.
