Difflam is a benzydamine 0.15% anti-inflammatory rinse and spray that eases the pain of a sore throat, mouth ulcers and soreness after dental work.

What is Difflam Oral Rinse and Spray?

Difflam is a pharmacy medicine containing benzydamine hydrochloride 0.15%, sold as a mouth rinse you gargle with and a spray you aim at the sore spot. It is used for painful, inflamed conditions of the mouth and throat, including sore throat, mouth ulcers and soreness after dental treatment.

How does it help?

Benzydamine is an anti-inflammatory that works on the surface it touches rather than travelling round the body. It settles the inflammation in the lining of the mouth and throat and has a mild local numbing effect, so the raw, swollen feeling eases and swallowing becomes more comfortable.

Key benefits

  • Eases the pain of a sore throat, mouth ulcers and soreness after dental work
  • Acts on the sore area itself, so very little is absorbed elsewhere
  • Rinse for soreness spread across the mouth, spray for reaching one spot at the back of the throat
  • Our pharmacist can advise whether it suits alongside your usual painkiller

Who should take care?

Always read the patient information leaflet before use. Difflam is not suitable for children aged 12 or under. It is not advisable if you are sensitive to aspirin or anti-inflammatory painkillers, and it can trigger wheezing in people with a history of asthma. The rinse contains alcohol and benzyl alcohol, so tell us if you have reacted to either. Keep it away from the eyes. See your GP if your symptoms have not improved after seven days, if you have a high temperature, or if a mouth ulcer lasts more than three weeks. Our pharmacist checks it is right for you before it is dispensed.
