What is Covonia Chesty Cough Mixture Mentholated 300ml?

Covonia Chesty Cough Mixture Mentholated is the familiar dark, strong-tasting cough mixture for a productive (chesty) cough and a sore throat. It combines levomenthol with two traditional plant extracts, squill and liquorice, in a syrup base. This 300ml bottle is the family size and can be given to children from 5 years at a reduced dose.

How does it help?

Squill and liquorice are traditional expectorants: they help loosen the thick mucus on the chest so it is easier to cough up and clear. The levomenthol gives the mixture its warming, clearing taste and soothes an irritated throat. Adults and children over 12 take one or two 5ml spoonfuls every four hours if needed; children aged 5 to 12 take one 5ml spoonful every four hours if needed.

Who should take care?

Always read the patient information leaflet before use. Do not take it if you have a heart condition or are allergic to any of the ingredients. Each 5ml contains about 1.3g of sucrose and 1.3g of glucose, which matters if you have diabetes, as well as a small amount of alcohol (ethanol) and parahydroxybenzoate preservatives, which may cause allergic reactions. Not for children under 5. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, ask a pharmacist first. If the cough lasts more than three weeks, gets worse, or you cough up blood, see your doctor.
