It's a glycerol-based demulcent: the syrup coats and soothes the lining of the throat, easing the irritation that triggers a dry, tickly cough. It contains no cough-suppressant drug.

What’s the difference between Benylin Dry & Tickly and Benylin Chesty Coughs?
This one is for a dry, tickly cough that doesn’t bring anything up — a glycerol and sucrose syrup that coats and soothes an irritated throat, with no cough-suppressant drug in it. Benylin Chesty Coughs is an expectorant containing guaifenesin, made for a cough that brings up phlegm. Choose by what your cough is doing, or ask our pharmacist.
Can children take Benylin Dry & Tickly?
From 1 year, yes — the licence says it must not be given to a child under 1. There are different amounts for children aged 1–5 and for over-5s, so follow the pack leaflet, and our pharmacist can confirm it’s the right choice for your child before you start.
Can I take it while pregnant or breastfeeding?
The product information says its safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding hasn’t been formally established, but it isn’t considered to be a hazard. There’s no antihistamine and no cough suppressant in it — just soothing glycerol and sucrose. It does contain sugar, so mention it if you have diabetes. Either way, have a quick word with our pharmacist first.
How long should I use it before getting checked?
The product information says to stop and get advice if symptoms last more than 3 days or get worse. The NHS advises seeing a GP for any cough lasting more than 3 weeks, and asking for an urgent appointment or calling NHS 111 if you’re coughing up blood, have chest pain, feel very unwell or find it hard to breathe.
