What is Allevia 120mg Tablets?

Allevia is an antihistamine tablet that relieves the symptoms of hay fever (seasonal allergic rhinitis), such as sneezing, a runny or itchy nose, and itchy, watery eyes. Each tablet contains fexofenadine 120 mg and is for adults and children aged 12 and over.

How does it help?

Fexofenadine blocks the action of histamine, the natural substance the body releases during an allergic reaction, helping to reduce hay fever symptoms.

Common questions

Is Allevia the same as fexofenadine?

Yes. Allevia is the brand name for fexofenadine hydrochloride, and these tablets contain 120 mg of it — the same active ingredient you’d see on a generic fexofenadine box. It’s licensed here for the symptoms of hay fever in adults and children aged 12 and over, and it’s on general sale, so no prescription is needed.

Is Allevia non-drowsy?

Fexofenadine is classed as a non-drowsy antihistamine — its product information reports no significant effect on the central nervous system, so it’s unlikely to affect driving. Other antihistamines vary, and some do make people noticeably sleepy, which is why the NHS suggests asking a pharmacist about non-drowsy options. If cetirizine or loratadine hasn’t suited you, our pharmacist can talk you through switching.

Can I use Allevia for hives?

Not this one. Allevia 120 mg is licensed for hay fever symptoms. There’s a separate product, Allevia Hives 180 mg, licensed for long-lasting (chronic) hives in people aged 12 and over — a different strength and a different licence. If you have an itchy rash that keeps coming back, speak to our pharmacist rather than using this pack for it.

My hay fever is not improving on tablets alone. What next?

The NHS advice is to see a GP if hay fever symptoms are getting worse or aren’t improving with pharmacy treatments. Two things are worth checking with our pharmacist first: whether a steroid nasal spray or antihistamine eye drops would add to the tablet, and whether anything is blunting it — indigestion remedies containing aluminium or magnesium reduce how much fexofenadine is absorbed, so leave about two hours between them. Wheeziness or breathlessness needs same-day advice.
