Fast-acting, non-drowsy antihistamine for hayfever, pet allergy, dust mite and skin allergy relief lasting up to 24 hours.

What is Cetirizine 10 mg Antihistamine Tablets?

Cetirizine is an everyday antihistamine tablet used to relieve the symptoms of hay fever and other allergies. It eases sneezing, a runny or itchy nose, itchy watery eyes and allergic skin reactions such as hives.

How does it help?

Cetirizine blocks histamine, the natural chemical your body releases during an allergic reaction, which is what causes the sneezing, itching and swelling. It is a non-drowsy (second-generation) antihistamine, so most people can take it during the day, with one tablet giving relief that lasts up to 24 hours.

Key benefits

  • One tablet a day for up to 24-hour relief
  • Non-drowsy for most people
  • Works on hay fever, pet, dust-mite and skin allergies
  • Suitable for adults and children aged 6 and over
  • Easy-to-swallow tablet

Who should take care?

Always read the patient information leaflet before use. Don't use if you're allergic to any of the ingredients. Speak to our pharmacist if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, taking other medicines, or have any ongoing health conditions such as kidney problems.

Common questions

Is cetirizine the same as Piriteze or Zirtek?
Yes — those are brand names for the same medicine, cetirizine hydrochloride 10 mg. What we supply is the generic version, with the identical active ingredient at the same strength. Packaging and tablet appearance vary between manufacturers, which is why our photo is an illustration, but the antihistamine inside is the same.
Is cetirizine really non-drowsy?
It’s a second-generation, non-drowsy antihistamine, so most people take it during the day without trouble. Even so, some people do feel sleepy on it. The licence says anyone who feels drowsy shouldn’t drive or use machinery, and alcohol or other sedating medicines can add to the effect — see how it suits you first.
How quickly does it work, and can I take it every day through the season?
Most people feel relief within an hour or two, the effect peaks at around four hours, and one dose keeps working for at least 24 hours — hence once a day. Taking it daily through the hay fever season is normal. See your GP if symptoms get worse or don’t improve with pharmacy treatments. Antihistamine tablets are not a treatment for a severe allergic reaction — that’s a 999 emergency.
Can children take these 10 mg tablets?
Not under 6 — the 10 mg tablet can’t be adjusted to the smaller amount younger children need, so a liquid is used instead. From 6 years upwards the tablets can be used, at a lower daily dose than an adult’s; the pack leaflet sets this out and our pharmacist can check it’s right for your child.
