What is Systane Ultra Lubricant Eye Drops 10ml?

Systane Ultra is a lubricant eye drop for dry eyes - the gritty, sandy, tired or burning feeling that often comes with screen work, air conditioning, contact lens wear, windy weather or simply getting older. It is a medical device rather than a licensed medicine, so it works physically on the surface of the eye rather than pharmacologically. The 10ml bottle is a multi-dose bottle for repeated use.

How does it help?

The drops contain two lubricants, polyethylene glycol 400 and propylene glycol, carried in a gel-forming system. On contact with the tear film the drop thickens slightly and spreads into a smooth, moisture-holding layer over the surface of the eye. That layer holds moisture against the surface of the eye, so blinking feels less scratchy and the eye stays comfortable between blinks.

Who should take care?

Always read the instructions before use. Do not let the dropper tip touch your eye, your fingers or any other surface, and do not use the drops if the solution has changed colour or gone cloudy. If you wear contact lenses, follow the instructions on the pack before using them. Note the discard-after-opening period printed on the carton and do not keep the bottle beyond it. Stop using the drops and get your eyes looked at if you have eye pain, a change in your vision, redness that will not settle, a sensitivity to light, or if the dryness continues despite regular use - those need an optometrist or GP rather than a drop.
