What is Pirinase Hayfever Relief 0.05% Nasal Spray?

Pirinase Hayfever Relief is a steroid nasal spray containing fluticasone, used to prevent and relieve the nasal symptoms of hay fever such as sneezing, a runny, itchy or blocked nose. It is for adults aged 18 and over.

How does it help?

Fluticasone is a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation inside the nose, calming the allergic response over the season. It works best when used regularly, and full benefit builds up over a few days of use.

Who should take care?

Always read the patient information leaflet before use. For adults aged 18 and over and for use in the nose only. Don't use if you're allergic to any of the ingredients or have a current nasal infection. Speak to our pharmacist if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, taking other medicines (including other steroids), or have any ongoing health conditions, and if symptoms don't improve within a couple of weeks.

Common questions

How long does Pirinase take to work?
It isn’t an instant fix. Some relief can come quickly, but the licence says maximum benefit may need 3–4 days of continuous treatment — so use it every day rather than only on bad days, ideally starting before the pollen really builds. If there’s no improvement after about a week, stop and speak to our pharmacist.
What’s the difference between Pirinase, Beconase and Clarinaze?
All three are steroid nasal sprays for nasal allergy symptoms, but the steroid differs: Pirinase is fluticasone propionate, Beconase is beclometasone dipropionate and Clarinaze is mometasone furoate. Pirinase is on general sale; the other two are pharmacy medicines. If one hasn’t suited you, our pharmacist can talk you through the hay fever range.
Who shouldn’t use Pirinase?
It’s licensed for adults aged 18 and over only. Don’t use it if you’re allergic to any of the ingredients, if you have an untreated infection in your nose, or if you’ve had recent nasal surgery or injury. The licence also says it must not be used alongside HIV medicines. Tell our pharmacist if you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, or already using another steroid.
How long can I keep using it, and when should I see a GP?
The licence says not to use it continuously for more than one month without medical advice, and to stop if nothing has improved after seven days. The NHS advice is to see your GP if hay fever symptoms are getting worse, or if they don’t improve with treatments bought from the pharmacy.
