What is ColdZyme Mouth Spray 20ml?

ColdZyme is a mouth spray you use at the first sign of a cold, or when you know you have been around people with one. It is a medical device rather than a medicine: it works physically, by coating the throat, instead of by a drug being absorbed. The 20ml bottle is menthol flavoured, sugar-free and contains no preservatives, gluten or lactose.

How does it help?

Each dose sprays a thin moisturising film of glycerol and a natural enzyme from cod onto the lining of the mouth and throat. The manufacturer describes a three-part action: the barrier catches cold viruses on the throat surface, limits their ability to infect cells and multiply, and keeps the throat moist and protected. Spray two pumps towards the back of the throat every two hours, up to six doses a day, and avoid eating or drinking for 20 minutes afterwards so the barrier stays in place.

Who should take care?

Always read the instructions before use. Do not use ColdZyme if you are allergic to any of the ingredients - it contains an enzyme derived from cod. Do not use it after surgery in the mouth or throat until the wound has healed, unless your doctor agrees. Spray towards the back of the throat without breathing in, as inhaling the spray can irritate the airways and cause coughing or hoarseness. One bottle should be used by one person only. If you have a high fever or your symptoms are worse than a normal cold, see a doctor, as they may be due to something else. Not for children under 4.
