What is Becodefence Allergy Defence Nasal Spray 120 Sprays?
Becodefence Allergy Defence is a nasal spray from the makers of Beconase that works as a physical barrier rather than as a drug. It is used for the sneezing, itching and blocked or runny nose of hay fever and other airborne allergies such as dust mites and pet dander. Because it contains no steroid or antihistamine, it can be used alongside your usual hay fever treatment or on its own.
How does it help?
The spray uses a thixotropic gel: shaking the bottle makes it thin enough to spray as a fine mist, and once it lands on the nasal lining it thickens back into a gel that coats the surface. This layer sits between the allergens in the air you breathe and the sensitive cells that react to them, so less pollen reaches those cells and less of the histamine that causes the symptoms is released. Each application lasts up to around six hours, so it is used one or two sprays into each nostril, two to three times a day, after blowing the nose.
Key benefits
- Helps prevent symptoms rather than only treating them once they start
- No steroid, no antihistamine and no drowsiness
- Can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Fine to use with antihistamine tablets or a steroid nasal spray if you need more control
Who should take care?
Always read the instructions before use. Do not use it if you are allergic to any of the ingredients; it contains sesame oil. Speak to our pharmacist before using it if you have a nasal infection, ulcers inside the nose or have recently had nose surgery. Apply it before you go out and re-apply through the day, on a freshly blown nose. Stop and seek advice if it causes real discomfort, and see your GP if symptoms are not improving after two weeks.
