What is Chlorphenamine Allergy Tablets and Oral Solution?
Chlorphenamine is one of the older, well-established antihistamines, used for the symptoms of hay fever and other allergies — sneezing, a runny or itchy nose, itchy or watering eyes — and for itchy rashes such as nettle rash and reactions to insect bites. It is a pharmacy medicine, so it is supplied from behind the counter rather than off the shelf. The tablets are for adults and children aged 6 and over; the oral solution suits younger children and anyone who finds tablets difficult.
How does it help?
When you meet something you are allergic to, cells in the lining of the nose, eyes and skin release histamine, which is what causes the swelling, itching and streaming. Chlorphenamine blocks the receptors histamine acts on, so those symptoms are damped down. Unlike the newer once-a-day antihistamines it crosses into the brain, which is why it commonly causes drowsiness.

- Supplied from behind the counter, so you can ask our pharmacist about it
Who should take care?
Always read the patient information leaflet before use. Chlorphenamine makes many people drowsy, so do not drive, cycle or use tools or machinery until you know how it affects you, and avoid alcohol while taking it. Tell us if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to conceive, if you take an MAOI antidepressant, or if you have glaucoma, an enlarged prostate or trouble passing urine, epilepsy, liver problems, or a lung condition such as asthma or bronchitis. Do not take other medicines containing an antihistamine at the same time, including cold and flu remedies. Answer the questions honestly — our pharmacist checks them and decides whether this medicine is right for you before anything is dispensed.
