Questions, answered plainly

Do I need a prescription?

Nystatin is a pharmacy-supplied prescription medicine — our pharmacist provides it after a short consultation. Daktarin oral gel is available to buy over the counter.

What causes oral thrush?

Often inhaled steroids (asthma pumps), dentures, antibiotics or a dry mouth. We'll ask about these so we can help prevent it coming back.

How long do I need to take nystatin for oral thrush?

Treatment usually continues for seven days, and for at least 48 hours after your symptoms have cleared, to help prevent the thrush coming back. Try to complete the recommended course even if your mouth feels better sooner. If your symptoms have not improved within seven days, worsen or return, arrange a review with our pharmacist or your GP.

Is nystatin safe to use in pregnancy or while breastfeeding?

Nystatin works locally in the mouth and is minimally absorbed by the body, so it is generally considered suitable during pregnancy and breastfeeding when treatment is clearly needed. Our pharmacist will confirm your pregnancy or breastfeeding status during the consultation and record it before any supply, so you can discuss any concerns at that point.

What if my oral thrush keeps coming back?

Recurrent or persistent oral thrush should be discussed with your GP, as it can indicate an underlying condition that needs investigating — this service covers a single course of treatment. Simple steps can reduce recurrence: clean and disinfect dentures thoroughly, rinse your mouth after using a steroid inhaler and check your inhaler technique, keep up good oral hygiene, and address dry mouth or smoking.
