Eye drops containing sodium cromoglicate 2% w/v, a pharmacy medicine supplied over the counter for allergic conjunctivitis such as hayfever eye symptoms.

What is Sodium Cromoglicate 2% w/v Eye Drops?

Sodium Cromoglicate 2% w/v Eye Drops relieve and help prevent the eye symptoms of allergies, such as red, itchy, watery eyes caused by hay fever (allergic conjunctivitis).

How does it help?

Sodium cromoglicate is a mast cell stabiliser; it works by preventing the release of histamine and other substances that trigger the allergic response in the eye, easing and helping to prevent symptoms.

Key benefits

  • Relieves itchy, red, watery allergy eyes
  • Helps prevent hay fever eye symptoms
  • Soothing eye drop format
  • Suitable for regular use during allergy season
  • Contains sodium cromoglicate 2%

Who should take care?

Always read the patient information leaflet before use. Follow the leaflet on how often to use the drops and how long to continue; regular use gives the best results. Do not wear soft contact lenses during treatment unless advised. Don't use if you're allergic to any of the ingredients. Speak to our pharmacist if symptoms don't improve, or if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, taking other medicines, or have any ongoing eye conditions. Our pharmacist checks every order before it's supplied.

Common questions

Is sodium cromoglicate the same as Opticrom?
In the way that matters, yes — Opticrom is a brand name for sodium cromoglicate 2% w/v eye drops, and this is the same active ingredient at the same strength, from Brown & Burk. We stock Opticrom Hayfever too if you’d rather have the name you recognise on the box.
Do I need to use them every day, or only when my eyes flare up?
Regular use works better. Sodium cromoglicate is a mast cell stabiliser: it stops the release of the natural substances that set off the allergic reaction, rather than mopping up afterwards. The leaflet says to keep using the drops while you’re still around whatever you react to, because symptoms can come back if you stop. Once opened, don’t keep a bottle beyond four weeks.
Can I wear contact lenses while I’m using them?
Not soft ones during a course of treatment. The drops contain benzalkonium chloride, which soft lenses can absorb and which may change their colour. The leaflet says to take lenses out before putting the drops in and leave them out for 15 minutes afterwards. Your sight can blur briefly after a dose, so don’t drive until it clears.
Who shouldn’t use them, and when should I get my eyes looked at?
The product information covers adults and children over 6, and says the drops shouldn’t be used in a child under 6. Stop and see a doctor if itching, redness or swelling gets worse. The NHS says ask for an urgent GP appointment or call NHS 111 for eye pain, sensitivity to light, changes in vision or very red eyes. More on hay fever.
