Optrex Bacterial Conjunctivitis Eye Ointment contains the antibiotic chloramphenicol to treat acute bacterial conjunctivitis - a red, sticky, gritty eye - in adults and children aged 2 and over. Use for 5 days. Pharmacy medicine. 4g.

What is Optrex Bacterial Conjunctivitis 1% Eye Ointment 4g?

Optrex Bacterial Conjunctivitis Eye Ointment is a pharmacy antibiotic for acute bacterial conjunctivitis - where the white of the eye or the eyelid is red and there is a sticky discharge that can glue the eye shut in the morning - in adults and children aged 2 and over.

How does it help?

Chloramphenicol is an antibiotic that kills the bacteria causing the infection. Apply about 1cm of ointment inside the lower eyelid of the affected eye(s) three or four times a day, or only at night if you are using chloramphenicol drops during the day. Keep using it for the full 5 days even if the eye looks better, then throw away what is left.

Key benefits

  • Treats bacterial conjunctivitis
  • Antibiotic eye ointment
  • From age 2
  • Easy-to-use tube

Who should take care?

Not for children under 2 - they should see a doctor. Do not use if you or your family have had blood problems (such as low blood cell counts), including with chloramphenicol before. See a doctor straight away if your vision is affected, the eye is very painful or sensitive to light, looks cloudy, the pupil looks unusual, there is a rash on the face or scalp, or something may be in the eye. Do not wear contact lenses during treatment (soft lenses: wait 24 hours after finishing). If it is no better in 48 hours, or gets worse, see a doctor. Vision may blur briefly after applying - do not drive until it clears.
