Night-time cold and flu relief with a sedating antihistamine to help you sleep through symptoms.

What is Night Nurse Cold & Flu Capsules?

A night-time capsule for the relief of cold and flu symptoms — aches, headache, a blocked or runny nose and coughing — taken at bedtime to help you rest.

How does it help?

It brings together paracetamol for pain and fever, a sedating antihistamine (promethazine) that helps you settle, and dextromethorphan to calm a dry cough.

Key benefits

  • Eases night-time cold and flu symptoms
  • Sedating antihistamine helps you sleep
  • Relieves aches, headache and fever
  • Calms a dry, tickly cough
  • Ready-measured night-time liquid

Who should take care?

Always read the patient information leaflet before use. Contains paracetamol — do not take with any other paracetamol-containing product, and never exceed the stated dose. It causes drowsiness, so take it at bedtime and don't drive afterwards; avoid alcohol. Don't use if you're allergic to any of the ingredients. Speak to our pharmacist if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, taking other medicines, or have any ongoing health conditions. Our pharmacist checks every order before it's supplied.

Common questions

What’s the difference between Day Nurse and Night Nurse?
Night Nurse is the bedtime one: alongside paracetamol and a cough suppressant it contains promethazine, a sedating antihistamine, so the drowsiness is part of how it helps you rest through a cold. Day Nurse is the daytime version, made to ease similar symptoms without making you sleepy. Our pharmacist can help you pick.
Can I take paracetamol or another cold remedy alongside it?
No. It already contains paracetamol 500 mg per capsule, and the product information warns against taking it with any other paracetamol-containing medicine because of the overdose risk. Plenty of cold and flu remedies and everyday painkillers contain paracetamol, so check every label — and ask our pharmacist if you’re unsure what else is safe alongside it.
Who should not take Night Nurse?
The licence says it isn’t to be given to under-16s except on medical advice, and rules it out altogether if you’re allergic to any ingredient, have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) in the last two weeks, or have breathing problems such as chronic obstructive airways disease, pneumonia or an asthma flare-up. Don’t use it in pregnancy or while breastfeeding without medical advice.
How many nights in a row can I take it?
The product information sets a maximum of 3 days’ continued use without medical advice. It causes drowsiness that can carry into the next day, so don’t drive or use machinery until you feel clear, and avoid alcohol. If you still feel very unwell, have chest pain, are breathless or are coughing up blood, contact your GP or NHS 111.
