What is Hibiwash Antiseptic Skin Cleanser 500ml?

Hibiwash is an antiseptic liquid skin cleanser containing chlorhexidine. It is licensed for antiseptic hand washing and for cleaning the skin before and after planned (elective) surgery, which is why hospitals often ask patients to wash with it at home in the days before an operation.

How does it help?

Chlorhexidine is an antiseptic that kills a wide range of bacteria. You wash with Hibiwash as you would with a liquid soap and then rinse it off, which reduces the number of germs on the skin's surface.

Who should take care?

Always read the patient information leaflet before use. For external use only: keep it out of the eyes and ears and do not use it inside the body; if it gets into the eyes, rinse them straight away with plenty of water. Do not use it if you have ever reacted to chlorhexidine. Chlorhexidine can very rarely cause a serious allergic reaction, so stop and get urgent medical help if you develop swelling, a widespread rash or difficulty breathing. Chlorhexidine has caused skin burns in newborn babies, especially those born early, so ask our pharmacist before using it on a baby. The liquid is flammable, so keep away from naked flames until your skin is dry. If your hospital has given you washing instructions, follow those.
