What is Cystitis Relief Sachets (Sodium Citrate)?

Cystitis Relief Sachets contain sodium citrate granules to ease the discomfort of mild cystitis in women. Each course provides short-term symptom relief over two days.

Sodium citrate makes the urine less acidic (more alkaline), which can help reduce the burning and stinging felt when passing water during a mild bout of cystitis.

Who should take care?

This product relieves symptoms but does not treat the underlying infection; see your GP if symptoms last more than two days, keep coming back, or if you have a fever, back pain or blood in your urine. Not intended for men, children, or pregnant women without medical advice. Always read the patient information leaflet before use. Don't use if you're allergic to any of the ingredients. Common questions

Is this the same as CanesOasis?
Both are sodium citrate 4 g granules, supplied as a six-sachet, 48-hour course for mild cystitis in adult women. CanesOasis is Bayer’s branded version; this is the unbranded equivalent. The medicine inside is the same, but the brand we supply here can vary, so flavour and packaging may differ. Our pharmacist is happy to talk you through either.
Do cystitis sachets get rid of the infection?
No. Sodium citrate makes your urine less acidic, so passing water stings less — but it doesn’t kill the bacteria causing the infection. If things aren’t settling, you may need antibiotics. Women aged 16–64 can be assessed free on the NHS at our pharmacy through Pharmacy First for UTI, with no GP appointment needed.
Who should not use cystitis sachets?
The leaflet rules them out if you have kidney disease now or in the past, heart disease, high blood pressure or diabetes, if you’re on a low-salt diet, or if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding. Each 4 g sachet carries around 939 mg of sodium — roughly half an adult’s recommended daily maximum. They’re for adult women only, never men or children. Tell our pharmacist about other medicines, especially lithium.
When should I get seen rather than treat it myself?
Get checked the same day if there’s blood in your urine, a high temperature or shivering, pain in your back or side just under the ribs, or you feel sick — those can mean the infection has reached the kidneys. Also see someone if you’re pregnant, over 65, a man or a child, or if symptoms haven’t improved within 48 hours. Out of hours, call NHS 111.
