Questions, answered plainly

How much do I get?

One 45 g tube per supply — the quantity our Patient Group Direction sets — with the patient leaflet. A tube usually lasts several weeks; once it's helping, choose a quantity marked repeat supply — the consultation asks how it's going and our pharmacist confirms it still suits you.

Gel or cream?

Both contain the same adapalene 0.1%. The gel suits oilier skin; the cream is a little more moisturising for drier or more sensitive skin. If your acne is more inflamed and a benzoyl-peroxide combination would suit you better, our pharmacist will tell you during the consultation.

How long until it works?

Acne treatments take time — most people see a real difference after 8–12 weeks of daily use. It's normal for skin to look a little worse in the first few weeks.

Is it suitable for teenagers?

Yes, from age 12. Under-16s need a parent or guardian present for the consultation.

What if my acne gets worse when I first start treatment?

An initial worsening, often called purging, is common in the first four to six weeks as the treatment brings existing blocked pores to the surface. This is expected and not a reason to stop. Visible results typically take eight to twelve weeks, so keep going unless you develop severe irritation — in that case, stop and speak to our pharmacist or your GP.

Do I need to wear sunscreen while using acne treatment?

Yes. Adapalene-based treatments can make your skin more sensitive to UV light, so sun protection is essential throughout treatment. Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen every day, even on cloudy days, and try to minimise time in strong sunlight. Sunlamps and tanning beds should be avoided completely. Our pharmacist will go through sun-protection advice with you before supply.

Will Epiduo bleach my hair or clothes?

It can. The benzoyl peroxide in Epiduo can bleach hair, eyebrows, coloured fabrics, clothing, towels and bed linen. Let the gel dry fully before dressing, touching fabric or going to bed, and avoid applying it near the hairline or eyebrows. This affects materials only — bleaching of the treated skin itself has not been a significant finding. Our pharmacist will cover this before supply.
