How does a TENS machine work?
Sticky pads on the skin pass a weak electrical current to the nerves underneath. The NHS explains this can help by blocking pain signals travelling to the brain and by encouraging your body to release its own painkillers, endorphins. No medicine is involved, which is why people often try it when they’d rather not take more tablets.
What sort of pain is it used for — and does it work for everyone?
People use TENS for everyday aches such as back, joint and muscle pain; the NHS also mentions period pain, labour pain, sports injuries and conditions like arthritis. The honest answer is that TENS doesn’t work for everyone. If you don’t know what’s causing your pain, get it checked before relying on a machine.
Who shouldn’t use a TENS machine?
Don’t use one if you have a pacemaker or another implanted electrical device, if you have epilepsy, or if you’re pregnant unless your doctor or midwife has told you to. Keep the pads off broken, infected or numb skin, and away from the front of the neck, the mouth and the eyes. Never use it while asleep, bathing or driving.
When should I see someone about the pain rather than treat it myself?
For back pain the NHS says see your GP if it isn’t improving after a few weeks, is stopping your day-to-day life, is worse at night, or you’ve lost weight without trying. Call 999 or go to A&E if you have numbness or weakness in both legs, loss of feeling around the genitals or anus, or bladder or bowel changes.
