What is Suresign Menopause (FSH) Rapid Test?

The Suresign Menopause (FSH) Rapid Test is a home urine test that helps indicate whether you may be approaching or going through the menopause. It detects raised levels of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH).

How does it help?

FSH levels tend to rise around the menopause. The test detects FSH in a urine sample and shows a result you can read at home, giving an indication that can be discussed with your doctor.

Key benefits

  • Simple home urine test
  • Detects raised FSH linked to menopause
  • Private and easy to use at home
  • Quick result
  • No laboratory needed

Who should take care?

This test gives an indication only and does not replace medical advice; discuss your symptoms and results with your doctor. Follow the instructions in the pack carefully, and check the use-by date before testing. Not for use as a form of contraception. Keep out of the reach of children.

Common questions

Can a home FSH test tell me I’m in the menopause?
Not on its own. FSH does rise around the menopause, but it swings a lot week to week during the perimenopause, so a single result can’t confirm anything. NHS guidance is that in women over 45 with typical symptoms the menopause is diagnosed from symptoms, not from a test. Treat this as a prompt to talk to your GP.
When should I do the tests, and why are there two in the pack?
Two lets you check twice, because one reading can be misleading. If you’re still having periods, the maker says to test in the first week of your cycle and repeat a week later if the first is negative but symptoms carry on. If your periods have stopped, test any time and repeat a week later. Results read at three minutes.
If the test is positive, can I stop using contraception?
No — a raised FSH doesn’t prove you’ve stopped ovulating, and this test is not a contraceptive. NHS guidance is to keep using contraception for one year after your last period if you’re 50 or over, and two years if you’re in your forties. Our pharmacist can go through the options with you.
What should I do with the result?
Take it to your GP as one piece of the picture, alongside your symptoms and your cycle. A test carries more weight under 45, where NHS guidance does use FSH to help identify an early menopause. And any vaginal bleeding after the menopause needs checking by a GP, whatever a home test says. See menopause.
