What is EMLA Cream 5%?

EMLA Cream is a local anaesthetic (numbing) cream containing lidocaine and prilocaine. It is licensed to numb the skin before procedures such as needle insertion or minor skin procedures, and to numb the genital mucosa before superficial procedures. This pack contains a 5 g tube with two dressings. Our pharmacist will check it is right for what you need it for.

How does it help?

Lidocaine and prilocaine are local anaesthetics that temporarily block nerve signals in the area where the cream is applied, reducing sensation for a period of time.

Who should take care?

Always read the patient information leaflet before use. Follow the application instructions carefully and do not apply to broken skin. Don't use if you're allergic to any of the ingredients. Common questions

What is EMLA cream licensed for?
It’s a numbing cream licensed to anaesthetise the skin before a needle goes in — blood tests, drips, vaccinations — and before superficial minor procedures. The licence also covers the genital mucosa from 12 years upwards, and cleaning leg ulcers in adults. Tell our pharmacist what you need it for and they’ll confirm it’s a suitable choice.
Do I need a prescription for EMLA cream?
No — it’s a Pharmacy (P) medicine, supplied without a prescription but only after a pharmacist’s suitability check, which is why we ask a few questions first. This pack is a 5 g tube with two dressings; the dressings are the airtight covers that hold the cream against the skin while it works. The leaflet gives the timings.
Can it be used on children?
For numbing skin before needles and minor procedures, yes — the licence covers children as well as adults. But it isn’t recommended for babies born before 37 weeks, and the genital-mucosa use starts at 12 years. How much to apply and for how long varies with a child’s age, so check with our pharmacist before using it on a child.
Who should not use EMLA?
Anyone allergic to lidocaine, prilocaine or other amide local anaesthetics. It shouldn’t be applied to open wounds, and extra care is needed if you have G6PD deficiency or a hereditary tendency to methaemoglobinaemia, or take medicines that can trigger it. Keep it away from the eyes. If you’re pregnant, breastfeeding or on other medicines, speak to our pharmacist first.
