Maloff Protect is a once-a-day pharmacy antimalarial tablet (atovaquone and proguanil) to help prevent malaria in adults travelling to areas where it is a risk.

What is Maloff Protect 250mg/100mg Tablets 24?

Maloff Protect is a pharmacy medicine used to help prevent malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum in adults. Each tablet contains atovaquone 250mg and proguanil hydrochloride 100mg. You take one tablet a day with food or a milky drink, starting one to two days before you enter the malaria area, every day while you are there, and for seven days after you leave.

How does it help?

Atovaquone and proguanil work together against the malaria parasite at the stage when it first multiplies in the liver and blood. Atovaquone interferes with the parasite's energy production and proguanil blocks an enzyme it needs to make new DNA. Taken every day, the two help stop the parasite establishing an infection if you are bitten by an infected mosquito, which is why the tablets need to be continued for a week after you get home.

Key benefits

  • One tablet a day, taken with food or a milky drink
  • Start one to two days before travel and stop seven days after leaving the risk area
  • Available from the pharmacy for adults, so no GP appointment is needed for the tablets
  • A 24-tablet pack covers a trip of around two weeks

Who should take care?

Always read the patient information leaflet before use. Maloff Protect is for adults only and is not suitable for anyone under 40kg or with any degree of kidney or liver problem. Do not take it if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding unless a doctor has advised you to. Tell the pharmacist about any other medicines you take, particularly warfarin or other anticoagulants, rifampicin or rifabutin, metoclopramide, tetracycline, efavirenz or other HIV medicines. If you are sick within an hour of a dose, take another tablet. No antimalarial is completely reliable, so keep using repellent, nets and cover-up clothing, and seek urgent medical help if you develop a fever during your trip or in the year after you return. Our pharmacist will check the tablets are right for you and for your destination before they are dispensed.
