What is LoviOne Emergency Contraception 1.5mg Levonorgestrel Tablet?
LoviOne is an emergency contraceptive pill, often called the morning after pill, containing levonorgestrel, a progestogen hormone. It is a single tablet for use after unprotected sex or when your usual contraception may have failed. It is for occasional use and is not a regular method of contraception.
How does it help?
Levonorgestrel works mainly by stopping or delaying the release of an egg, so there is no egg for sperm to fertilise. It does not end a pregnancy that has already started. The sooner it is taken the more effective it is, so ideally take it within 12 hours.
Key benefits
- One tablet, taken as soon as possible after unprotected sex
- Can be used up to 72 hours (3 days) afterwards
- Can be taken at any time in your cycle, unless your period is overdue
- Our pharmacist reviews every request in confidence and can talk through your options
Who should take care?
Always read the patient information leaflet before use. Take it as soon as possible: it does not prevent pregnancy in every case, and it does not protect against sexually transmitted infections. It does not end an existing pregnancy and should not be taken if you are already pregnant or your period is overdue. If you are sick within 3 hours of taking it, another tablet is needed, so contact us. If you have taken certain medicines in the last 4 weeks, including some epilepsy medicines, rifampicin, rifabutin, griseofulvin, some HIV medicines or St John's wort, it may work less well; a copper coil, or a double dose on a pharmacist's or doctor's advice, may be recommended. It is not recommended with severe liver problems, and conditions that seriously affect absorption, such as Crohn's disease, may stop it working well. It may also work less well at a higher body weight. Tell us if you have had an ectopic pregnancy or an infection of the fallopian tubes, or if you take ciclosporin. If you are breastfeeding, take it straight after a feed and leave at least 8 hours before the next one. Use condoms until your next period, and take a pregnancy test if your period is late or unusual. Our pharmacist checks it is right for you before it is supplied.
